Verbos que cambian su vocal radical = Radical-Changing Verbs

Muchos verbos de las tres conjugaciones cambian la vocal radical e en ie, o la o en ue, siempre que el acento prosódico recaiga sobre la raíz. =Many verbs of the three conjugations change the radical vowel e to ie, or the radical vowel o to ue, whenever the stress falls on the root.

cerrar =to close, to shut
cierro, cierras, cierra, cerramos, cierran

volver = to return
vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, volvemos, vuelven

Algunos verbos de la tercera conjugación cambian la vocal radical e en i, siempre que el acento prosódico recaiga sobre la raíz. = Some of the verbs of the third conjugation change the radical vowel e to i whenever the stress falls on the root.

pedir =to ask (for)
pido, pides, pide, pedimos, piden

Obsérvase que en la primera persona del plural del presente de indicativo la vocal radical no cambia, debido a que el acento prosódico no recae sobre la raíz sino sobre la terminación. =Note that in the first person plural of the present indicative, the radical vowel does not change, since in this form the stress falls on the inflectional ending, and not on the root.

Con excepción de los cambios constantes en la vocal radical. estos verbos se conjugan lo mismo que los verbos regulares. = With the exception of the regularly recurring changes in the radical vowels, these verbs are inflected like regular verbs.

No hay regla absoluta para conocer los verbos que cambian su vocal radical. Siempre que un verbo sufra esta alteración, se indicará en los vocabularios del modo siguiente: =There is no rule by which all radical changing verbs can be recognized. Whenever a verb has this alteration, it will be indicated in the vocabularies in the following manner:

Adjetivos demostrativos = Demonstrative Adjectives

este, esta = this... estes, estas = these
ese, esa = that... esos, esas = those
aquel, aquella = that... aquellos, aquellas = those

Ese se refiere, por regla general, a la persona o cosa que está cerca de la persona a quien se habla. Aquel se refiere a la persona o cosa que está más distante. = Ese generally refers to the person or thing that is close to the person speaking. Aquel refers to the person or thing that is more distant.

El adjetivo demostrativo se repite, por regla general, delante de cada nombre a que se refiere. = A demonstrative adjectives is generally repeated before each noun to which it refers.

Pronombres demostrativos = Demonstrative Pronouns

éste, ésta, esto = this (one)... éstos, éstas = these
ése, ésa, eso = that (one)... ésos, ésas = those
aquél, aquella, aquello = that (one)... aquéllos, aquellas = those

Esto, eso, y aquello son neutros. Se usan para indicar una cosa que no se menciona por su nombre o un idea. No pueden representar nombres, puesto que no hay nombres neutros enespañol. = Esto, eso and aquello are neutral. They are used to indicate a thing that is not mentioned by name or an idea. They cannot represent nouns, since there are no neuter nouns in Spanish.

Nótese que los pronombres demostrativos masculinos y femeninos se distenguen de los adjetivos demostrativos por llevar el acento escrito. Los pronombres demostrativos neutros nunca se usan como adjeteivos y en consecuencia no necesitan el acento. = Note that the masculine and feminine demonstrative pronouns are distinguished by the accent mark. The neuter demonstrative pronouns are never used as adjectives, and therefore do not need the accent mark.

Las conjugaciones regulares =Regular Conjugations
En español las conjugaciones de los verbos se dividen en tres, correspondiendo a las terminaciones del infinitivo: -ar, -er, -ir. Todos los verbos regulares se conjugan como hablar, aprender, o vivir. =In Spanish, verbs are divided into three conjugations, according to the infinitive endings: -ar, er, ir. All regular verbs are conjugated like hablar (to speak), aprender (to learn), or vivir (to live).

Las terminaciones del presente de indicativo son:

Supresión del pronombre personal que sirve de sujeto =Omission of the Subject Personal Pronoun

En español se suprime, por regla general, el pronombre que sirve de sujeto al verbo. =In Spanish, the subject pronoun is usually omitted.

  • Algunas veces se necesita el pronombre sujeto del verbo para dar mayor émfasis a la expresión o para darle mayor claridad. =Sometimes the subject pronoun is necessary in order to give emphasis to the expression or to give more clarity.
  • La expresión resulta más correcta y cortés con el empleo del pronombre usted o ustedes, pero no necesaria la repetición del pronombre en la frase. =It is usually more polite to express usted or ustedes, but this pronoun need not be repeated within a sentence.
